A Beginner’s Guide to How the Oil & Gas Industry Works

oil and gas industry

The oil and gas industry is one among those very few spokes that holds the global economy together. Without it, there will be no mobility; indeed, factories would shut down, and homes would remain dark. Have you ever stopped to think of how crude oil, buried deep under the earth, is turned into fuel for your moving automobile or the gas that keeps your home warm?

This guide breaks it all down into baby steps such that it will take you right from exploration to distribution.

Step-by-Step: From Exploration to Distribution

1. Exploration-Searching for Oil and Gas

Before oil and gas can be extracted, it must all be established where they are; – and this is usually called exploration: the geologists and geophysicists apply very sophisticated technical means such as seismic survey, satellite imaging, and geological mapping for exploration underneath the earth surface or the ocean floor.

Exploration companies drill exploratory wells (also called wildcat wells) to determine whether oil and gas exist in commercial quantities. If the findings are promising, further drilling and assessment are carried out to estimate the size and feasibility of extraction.

2. Drilling and Extraction- Bringing Oil to the Surface

At such a time when a find is announced in respect of reserves, it is time to start drilling. Depending on where this process is taking place, it can be carried out offshore or land, meaning onshore drilling or offshore drilling. It is a deep bore to reach that reservoir-from it, allowing that oil or gas to flow up by gravity.

This advanced method may either be hydraulic fracturing (fracking) or enhanced oil recovery (EOR). Fracking means introducing high-pressure fluid into fractures within the rock formation to enable oil and gas extraction through increased permeability. EOR recovery involves using steam, gas, or chemicals to improve recovery from a reservoir.

3. Production and Treatment- Refining Crude Oil

After crude oil or natural gas is extracted, it has to be refined to remove impurities and separated:

The processes of refining include-

  • A heating operation at which crude oil is fractionated into different components by virtue of their boiling points.
  • Cracking Disintegration of massive hydrocarbons into smaller valued products, such as gasoline.
  • Treatment purification from contaminants like sulfur that put the fuel out of environmental standards.

For natural gas, the processing includes the removal of water, impurities, and several gases for consumption.

4. Transportation – Transferring Oil and Gas into Markets

Once refined, oil and gas products must be transported to consumers. This can be done through pipes, tankers, trucks, and rail. Pipelines provide the most efficient means of transporting vast quantities of oil and gas on long haul distances.

  • Crude oil pipelines transport oil from production sites to refineries.
  • Natural gas pipes carry gas from power plants into industries and homes.
  • LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) carriers transport gas overseas in a compressed liquid form.

5. Distribution – Transmitting Energy to Consumers

At one end of the pipeline, transport involves getting refined products to end-users. This includes:

  • Gasoline and diesel going to fuel stations
  • Aviation jet fuel
  • Natural gas to homes, enterprises, and power plants
  • Petrochemicals for plastics, fertilizers, and pharmaceuticals
